Remember when we talked about keeping your second brain in plain text files? And how the simplest solution is usually the one that sticks? Well, after some use of that system, I’ve discovered something unexpected: The most valuable notes aren’t the perfectly organized ones. They’re the ones where I left messy little messages to my future self about why they might care.

The Problem With Our Plain Text System

The plain text system works. It’s simple, portable, and doesn’t rely on some app developer’s whims to keep your data intact. But there’s one thing that keeps bugging me.

In Part 3, we talked about using file names to connect ideas. That’s great for finding stuff you already know you’re looking for. But what about the connections you can’t see yet? The ones that only make sense months from now, when you’re working on something completely different?

That’s where forward links come in. And trust me, they’re even simpler than our file naming system.
