How I Automated Audio Transcription (And Why You Might Want To)

Full Guided Tutorial — No Coding Knowledge Required!

8 min readJan 8, 2025

Last week, I found myself staring at an old to-do list from six months ago. Right there at the top: “Transcribe interview recordings (2 hours).” Below it, a series of checkmarks stretching across weeks. Each one representing another afternoon spent typing out conversations, rewinding, typing again.

Sound familiar?

What Nobody Tells You About Automation

When most people hear “automation,” they picture complex systems and endless lines of code. I know I did. But here’s what I’ve learned: Automation isn’t about being a technical genius. It’s about being lazy in the smartest way possible.

Think about it: How many hours have you spent this year just typing out recorded conversations? Interviews? Meeting notes? Podcast ideas? Now multiply that by your hourly rate. Yeah. That number made me uncomfortable too.

The Solution I Stumbled Into

After some late-night research, I discovered something interesting: Google has this thing called Cloud Speech-to-Text. But more importantly, you can automate it to work while you sleep.
